What to see & do : | The humpback whales generally arrive from mid September and continue passing Eden until late November. The first to arrive are the sub adults, followed by the mother & calf pods which often come right into Twofold Bay, giving their young a chance to rest on route to the Antarctic. A number of whale watching platforms at Eden provide opportunities to watch whales from shore, but nothing compares to getting close up to one of these majestic creatures. Explore Twofold Bay on a Cat Balou cruise and take in the sights of Boyd’s Tower, Seahorse Inn at Boydtown, the naval wharf, chip mill, mussel farms, Eden’s fishing fleet and on most trips you will see dolphins and seals.
Eden’s working wharf at Snug Cove is a great place to explore. Colourful fishing boats, tugs and leisure craft backed by a stunning vista across the Bay to Mount Imlay. The wharf building complex houses cafes, and the Sapphire Coast Marine Studies Centre. www.edenmarinediscovery.org.au Up the hill past the wharf is the Rotary Lookout with panoramic views over Twofold Bay and the Fisherman’s Memorial which reminds us just how dangerous a life at sea can be. Visit the famous “Killer Whale Museum” and while away the hours in the history of Eden and its colourful past. Check out www.killersofeden.com Take a walk around the boardwalk at Lake Curalo, which is a great location for bird watching, then go across the road to Aslings beach and follow the Maritime Heritage Walk which depicts the maritime history of Eden. To the north of Eden in Ben Boyd National Park, you can stroll through amazing forest, woodland, heath and a moist gully to the Pinnacles. Geological formations of colourful gravels and clays provide a spectacular sight. A walk for the adventurous, the Light to Light walking track runs from Ben Boyd Tower to Green Cape Lighthouse and passes through spectacular coastal scenery. The walk can take 3-4 days or you can do small sections of it. |
